Ex-Canadian women’s hockey coach awarded $3.7M in discrimination suit against UMD

DULUTH, Minn.—Former women’s hockey coach Shannon Miller was awarded nearly $3.75 million (U.S.) after suing the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) for discrimination and retaliation. The federal jury Thursday awarded Miller more than $744,000 for lost wages and benefits and $3 million for emotional distress. Despite being among the most successful women’s hockey coaches, UMD declined to renew Miller’s contract in late 2014 after 16 seasons. “It’s a big day, really, for women,” Miller said after the verdict. Miller said she’ll look for jobs in men’s and women’s college hockey and would like to become the first female coach in the NHL.
