BERLIN—It was the cutest thing. Small, furry, a silver-white teddy bear. Then they called it Hertha, and the magic was gone. The birth of a polar bear cub late last year was the best thing to happen to a Berlin zoo since the 2007 debut of Knut, an orphaned cub who rocketed to international stardom after being raised by a human trainer.
