Event lights up Lowell's Acre neighborhood

LOWELL — Hundreds of glowing paper lanterns were set afloat in the Western Canal on Saturday night, lighting up the Acre neighborhood during the annual Points of Light celebration. Laura Tavares, the chairman of the Points of Lights Committee, said people typically personalize the lanterns with drawings, prayers, or memorials. State Rep. Vanna Howard, who attends the event every year, said she wrote the word “Peace” on her lantern, using the markers provided for the event. According to event organizers, for Lowell, the Points of Light is a celebration of unity and renewal that brings together food, music, and the traditions of Lowell’s diverse cultures. In addition to the floating of the paper lanterns, the event also included plenty of food for a variety of palates.
