Since the 1996/97 season, the Golden Shoe has been awarded via a points system. The points system allows players in tougher leagues to win the prize even if they score fewer goals than players in a weaker division. Goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues according to UEFA coefficients are multiplied by a factor of two. However, goals scored in the leagues ranked from six to 21 are multiplied by a factor of 1.5, while goals scored in leagues ranked 22 and below are multiplied by a factor of 1. Barcelona star Lionel Messi has won the Golden Shoe a record six times and has claimed the prize for three years running.
