European markets climb as year-end approaches


European stocks logged a second consecutive record close on Tuesday, lifted by banks and commodity-linked shares, although gains were capped by thin, year-end trading. DublinThe Irish index of shares rose on Tuesday, buoyed by rises in banking and construction stocks as the year wound to a close. LondonThe blue-chip FTSE 100 index ended 0.8 per cent higher at 9940.7 points to hit a historic high for the first time in nearly seven weeks. EuropeThe pan-European STOXX 600 rose 0.6 per cent at 592.78, edging ever closer to the 600 points milestone. Basic resources led the STOXX 600 higher, up 1.7 per cent, as silver and gold steadied after a sharp retreat from record highs.
