European Researchers Pioneer Concrete Capable of Capturing Carbon DioxideThu 19th Feb, 2026The construction sector is widely recognized as a major contributor to global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, accounting for approximately eight percent of total annual emissions worldwide. The majority of these emissions arise during cement production, which is a critical component in the manufacturing of concrete. In response to the urgent need for sustainable building materials, a consortium of European researchers is developing an innovative form of concrete designed to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere. This challenge has driven scientists and engineers to seek alternatives that can reduce or even reverse the carbon footprint of construction materials. The resulting magnesium carbonate serves as a supplementary cementitious material, partially replacing traditional cement clinker in concrete mixes.
