In soccer, extra time has become a moment of dread. Poland, a side that didn’t lose a match at Euro 2016, was eliminated by semifinalist Portugal, a side that hasn’t won a match in regulation. Instead of reducing the tournament back to 16 teams, perhaps 20 is a better number. Officials for each match are provided a one-hour session with a tactical and technical observer who analyzes the teams they’re going to referee. Wonderful whistlers PARIS — The referees at Euro 2016 have remained anonymous, much to everyone’s delight.
