Etowah, Alabama, the new Gilead - News Summed Up

Etowah, Alabama, the new Gilead

Pregnant women are now being thrown in jail for drug offenses and held without bail in Alabama. Using the “logic” that these women pose a threat to their unborn children, the state must take charge to protect their pregnancies. It seems that police officials in Etowah county are enforcing this Alabama law with particular zeal. Hali Burns, was taken to the Etowah county jail just six days after giving birth to her son, with police saying that she had tested positive for a drug used by pregnant women with opioid addictions to help manage cravings and withdrawal. Her partner tried to bring pads and underwear to her, so that she wouldn’t have to bleed into her clothes, but Etowah county authorities wouldn’t let her have them.
