Ethiopia's 1896 victory over Italy was 'a celebration of African spirit' - Sirleaf

President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has stated that Ethiopia’s victory over Italian troops 121 years ago in the famous battle of Akwa was a victory for the ‘African spirit.’A spirit that echoed a common voice and determination by Africans to stand up and defeat external forces. Sirleaf who is on an official visit to Ethiopia joined the celebration and said the events of 1896 served as a turning point for African countries that were under colonial rule. Whiles in Kampala, his host President Yoweri Museveni lauded the efforts of Ethiopia at repelling the Italians in the historic battle. It’s also the anniversary of the Battle of Adwa, where King Menelik defeated the Italians in 1896. Ethiopian troops scored a victory back then by driving out Italians who had wanted to annex the country after taking over Somaliland.
