Ethiopians poised for national strike

Addis Ababa - Ethiopias two main opposition parties on Saturday urged Ethiopians to join in a three-day nationwide work stoppage starting Monday to protest the outcome of May elections won by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's party. The strike is aimed at forcing the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front to form a government of national unity amid charges by the opposition of electoral fraud. The parties have proposed the creation of a national unity government, "based on peace and reconciliation", to restore stability to the country following months of protests since May's general election. Ethiopians reacted with trepidation to the call for a strike, which could paralyze the country and bring essential services to a halt. "This is frightening as it is a call for general strike which would lead to widespread disturbances," a taxi driver said.
