An Ethiopian man seeking asylum in the United States was acquitted in an assault trial Wednesday after being accused of threatening three Austin police officers with a steak knife when they responded to a disturbance at his apartment. With his family and friends gathered in a Travis County courtroom Wednesday morning, Belihu fidgeted as the jury entered with its verdict. After the jury's foreman announced not guilty again on the third and final count, Belihu collapsed to the floor. Two officers testified with different accounts of what transpired. Belihu testified that he was following the officers to the door so he could close it behind them.
