Addis Ababa - Ten million Ethiopians are now threatened by drought and need additional food aid, the federal government disaster prevention commission said here on Monday. Officials of the federal disaster prevention and preparedness committee said a further 2,5 million people were now at risk. "They are the first victims of the lack of a Belg (the short rainy season from January to April) and now need food aid," said an official. The United Nations and meteorologists said last week rainfall in northern and central Ethiopia had raised hopes of a good wet season. Light rain fell in mid-April in several central, western and northern parts of Ethiopia before spreading down through the north-eastern Afar region and central and northern parts of the Somali region.
