The UAE and Ethiopian governments are reportedly working on an MoU to protect the rights of domestic workersThe UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has banned Ethiopian nationals from travelling to the UAE to work as domestic workers, according to local media reports. The official added that the UAE and Ethiopia are currently negotiating an MoU to protect the rights of Ethiopian domestic workers in the country. “Recently, we have experienced in some cases that our workers faced problems of non-payment wages and being denied health insurance,” the official said. “The temporary ban on recruitment of Ethiopian domestic workers is the first step to weeding out unscrupulous agencies and abusive sponsors.”As many as 400 Ethiopians enter the UAE each day, the official added. Both governments are also working to end illegal recruitment practices and human trafficking.
