Ethiopian cardinal calls for peace as country prepares to celebrate Easter

The head of the Ethiopian Catholic Church is calling on Christians in his war-ravaged country to make Easter meaningful by making peace and reconciliation a way of life. "Faith in the Resurrection of Christ gives every Christian and all humanity the strength to conquer all evil and sin", said Cardinal Berhaneyesus Souraphiel of Addis Ababa in his official message for Ethiopian Easter which will be celebrated on Sunday, April 24 this year. Ethiopians celebrate Easter as the most important Christian festival, bringing together all Christian denominations, including Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant, for a series of traditional services and activities. Although about 60% of Ethiopia's population is Christian (mostly Orthodox), Catholics constitute only one-percent of the country's 115 million people. Cardinal Souraphiel, who as President of the Ethiopian Bishops' Conference is the head of the Ethiopian Catholic Church of the Alexandrian Tradition, has called on all people of goodwill to pray, especially for those affected by the war on Ethiopian Good Friday, which is being celebrated throughout the country on April 22.
