Ethiopian Parliament Approves State of Emergency DecreeMarch 2, 2018 - Ethiopian parliament approved the State of Emergency declared by the Council of Ministers on February 16, 2018, by a vote of 395 in favor to 88 against, with 7 abstentions, according to FBC. This is one of highest profiles cases where Ethiopian parliament members broke ranks in votes. The last time around, parliament voted unanimously to approve the first state of emergency declaration. According to the reports, despite OPDO top leadership push, a substantial body of the Oromia members of parliament did not vote for the measure. The rift within the Ethiopian parliament is also a likely indication of what is to come down the road in Ethiopian polictics where the ruling party, EPRDF, ceases to function as a unitary block as it used to be.
