Ethiopian Orthodox Church divided: Social media restricted – BBCIndependent journalists in Azerbaijan are demanding the abolition of a newly established registry they say makes it impossible to do their job. In late January, a group of about 40 Azerbaijani journalists, media executives and lawyers released a statement calling for the dissolution of the state media register, which started in October under a law passed in December 2021. The law, whose stated purpose is “the systematization of information”, calls for the registration of all Azerbaijani media outlets and all journalists as individuals. But on February 6, the Executive Director of MEDIA, Ahmad Ismayilov, said his agency would track down media outlets that were not registered by the deadline and file a lawsuit against them. The journalists who oppose the registration started the hashtag #we_don’t_want_licensed_media on social media, and held their first public discussion on February 6.
