ETHIOPIAN Airlines, the African continent’s biggest air transport group, is accelerating its ambitious fleet growth strategy with a new order for five B777 freighters, writes Thelma Etim. Mesfin Tasew, who replaced Tewolde GebreMariam as the new chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines Group in March, says the new freighters will enable the company to meet the growing demand for cargo operations. This latest news follows the carrier signing a prior memorandum of understanding in March to purchase five brand new, fuel-efficient twin-engine B777-8 freighters. Ihssane Mounir, senior vice-president of commercial sales and marketing at Boeing, insists: “We value the trust that Ethiopian Airlines places in the B777 freighter to support their cargo ambitions which will provide them with increased capability and flexibility to their operations. The airline also operates three B737-800 converted freighters, along with a combined passenger aircraft fleet of more than 80 Boeing jets including B737s, B767s, B787s and B777s.
