Ethiopian Airlines Investigation Raises Questions Over Effectiveness Of Boeing's 737 MAX Fix

The investigation into the 737 MAX aircraft has revealed that following the recovery steps Boeing issued after the Lion Air 737 MAX crash last year was not good enough to prevent a second tragedy, according to a briefing by Ethiopian authorities Thursday. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)—which along with investigators from the U.S. NTSB and the French BEA assisted the Ethiopian authorities in their investigation—has hesitated to accept Boeing’s and the FAA’s recommendations on the 737 MAX software fix without further evidence. At this point, a consensus of objective third parties in favor of Boeing's software patch will be essential to re-launching the Boeing 737 MAX. However, a large number of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft fly in the U.S. and U.S. pilots have expressed confidence in the aircraft. Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos, who is himself a former fighter pilot, went to Seattle this week to run simulator test scenarios for the 737's MCAS system.
