Ethiopian Afar State Relocates 15,000 PastoralistsAugust 21, 2017 - As part of Villegazation program Ethiopia’s northeastern state, Afar region, will relocate 15,000 pastoralists, reports the Ethiopian news agency. The relocation is scheduled to be conducted in the current Ethiopian fiscal year. According to Usman Mohammed, Office Head at the Afar regional Basin Development and Villagization office, the resettlement will be based on availability of water and the needs of the community. According to Usman over 60 million Birr has been allocated for the construction of basic services in the resettlement areas. More than 17,000 pastoralists have relocated in the last Ethiopian fiscal year in the region, through the villagization program.
