Ethiopia war: World heritage site Lalibela back in government hands


The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are a Unesco world heritage siteThe Ethiopian military has regained control of the historic town of Lalibela from Tigrayan rebels. The TPLF said it took the decision to clear the way for a peaceful resolution to its conflict with the government. It is unclear when the military retook Lalibela, but Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen Hassen visited the town, in Amhara, on Sunday. Lalibela, famous for its rock-hewn churches which date back to the the 12th and 13th Centuries, was designated a Unesco world heritage site in 1978. The TPLF had dominated the federal government for more than 25 years, and now controls most of Tigray.
