China is suspected of being the main source of a powerful painkiller 50 times stronger than heroin that has caused record overdose deaths in the United States. These are big steps which would have a significant impact, said Mike Vigil, former head of international operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration. “Without China’s co-operation the United States would not be able to put a dent in the current opioid epidemic that has taken so many lives,” Vigil said. Diplomats invited to attend the briefing said Beijing’s action marked an important step for combatting the drug trade. “Even though Sweden is a small country we have problems, not as big as the United States, but we have problems with fentanyl as well,” he said.
