Ethiopia to Respect Pension Rights of Derg Military PersonnelSeptember 3, 2018 - The Ethiopian Ministry of National Defense disclosed that pension rights will be respected for eligible members of the Derg military personnel who were demobilized after 1991, when the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) took over power. Citing information given by General Berhanu Jula, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Defense Force, Addis Zemen newspaper reported that the Ministry of Defense will collect the documents of those who were demobilized without pension rights due to different pretexts, to restore their rights. It is to be recalled that members of the Ethiopian defense forces serving under colonel Mengistu Hailemariam were disbanded soon after the EPRDF took power in Addis Ababa in 1991. They were basically treated as enemy forces and disbanded unceremoniuosly with no jobs or pension benefits. He said work is already under way to restore rights of those who are eligible.
