Ethiopia seizes $1.2 million dollars contraband goods – New Business Ethiopia


The Customs Commission of Ethiopia seized worth 40 million birr (about $1.2 million) contraband goods including firearms in six days period before April 27, 2020. Most of the confiscated goods captured from smugglers were coming to Ethiopia from neighboring countries, while such as coffee were also captured leaving the country illegally. Recently on April 21, 2020, the Customs Commission of Ethiopia has also announced capturing contraband goods worth 21 million birr (about $631,000 at the current exchange rate). In addition, on April 16, 2020 and April 7, 2020 the Commission has also announced capturing contraband goods worth 16 million birr (close to half a million dollar) and 12 million birr (about $360,360(, respectively. Over the last nine months, Customs Commission of Ethiopia has seized goods worth 1.7 billion birr (about $51 million at current exchange rate).
