As a party to international conventions aimed at achieving gender equality, Ethiopia has taken an important step in designing and implementing policies that promote women’s rights and empower them. Ethiopia is one of the few countries in the world to have a female head of state and many ministerial portfolios, as well as the Federal Supreme Court are headed by women. It also stressed that “the Government is committed to addressing all the sexual and gender violations produced during recent armed confrontations between the federal army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front”. In this case an Inter ministerial Working Group was created to investigate and bring to justice perpetrators of violations of human rights and humanitarian law in three regional states. The recently signed peace agreement with the TPLF will also be important in establishing a transitional justice system that addresses the specific needs of women and girls, the government said.
