Ethiopia might see the rise of an Oromo Prime Minister


After the resignation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, The ruling coalition is expected to choose a new Prime Minister who is likely from an Oromo background. Nominating candidates and mitigating tensionsHailemariam Desalegn is the first modern Ethiopian leader to resign from the office of Prime Minister. These parties are, the Oromo People’s Democratic Organisation (OPDO), the Southern Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Front (SEPDF), the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) and last but not least the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Moreover, the ANDM might nominate deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen to be the next Premier. In an attempt to seek reconciliation and peace with Oromo people, the ruling coalition is likely to choose a politician with an Oromo background.
