Ethiopia Ranks Low in Internet Access, According Freedom House

Ethiopia Ranks Low in Internet Access, According Freedom HouseNovember 17, 2016 - Ethiopia’s internet is among the least free in the world, says Freedon House in its 2016 Net Freedom report. According to a new index released by the nonprofit Freedom House, Ethiopia ranked ahead of only Iran, Syria, and China, out of 65 countries ranked in terms of access to the internet, censorship, and freedom of information. It ranked the worst of any country in Africa in this Freedom House Ranking. Freedon House also says Ethiopia is one of the least connected countries in the world with an internet penetration rate of only 12 percent, citing 2015 data from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Low penetration rates stem from underdeveloped telecommunications infrastructure, which is almost entirely absent from rural areas, where about 85 percent of the population resides, according to the report.
