ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia—Yared Getachew’s favorite route to pilot on Ethiopian Airlines was Addis Ababa-Nairobi. It was a flight home. Born and raised in the Kenyan capital to an Ethiopian father and Kenyan mother, Mr. Getachew moved to Addis Ababa in 2007 and trained as a pilot at the prestigious Ethiopian Airlines aviation academy, graduating in 2010. His father, a prominent dentist, had suggested the experience would bolster the young man’s ties to Ethiopia.
