Ethiopia: Amnesty and EU concerned over arrest of top opposition figure

Ethiopia on Wednesday evening arrested a leading opposition member, Merera Gudina when he arrived home from a trip to Europe. Meanwhile the European Union (EU) has expressed concern over the arrest of Gudina. Instead of resorting to further repression and clamp-downs, the Ethiopian government must urgently and meaningfully address the human rights grievances that are fuelling unrest. The state of emergency had raised concerns about the use of repression to silent opposition members. Human rights groups continue to pile pressure on the government accusing it of using the security mechanisms to repress dissenting voices.
