OTTAWA—A puzzlingly vague statement from the federal ethics watchdog prompted mockery on Twitter and fuelled theatric outrage in the Commons over how many cabinet ministers have the same financial arrangements that landed Bill Morneau in hot water. But Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson — who says those assets are nonetheless legally held — refuses to be precise. Dawson now says that “fewer than five” cabinet ministers in the former Conservative government of Stephen Harper also did the same thing as Morneau — held controlled assets indirectly. CBC’s parliamentary writer Aaron Wherry tweeted “Ethics commissioner's office confirms that numbers fewer than five include four, three, two and one…. The Commons ethics committee says it will take a new look at the provisions, and summon Dawson to testify.
