Wu Ching-yu (吳清友), founder of the bookstore chain Eslite (誠品), has died Tuesday in Taipei, according to a statement released by the bookstore. The statement pointed out that Wu, who suffered from congenital cardiomegaly, passed away due to unspecified an "old heart problem." Wu transformed the art-and-architecture bookstore he established in 1989 into one of Taiwan's most renowned brands with over 40 stores in Taiwan and businesses in retail, restaurant and hospitality, logistics, lifestyle and arts, as well as three stores in Hong Kong and three in mainland China. According to local media, Wu was slated to appear at a press event on Thursday to promote a new book about his story in founding Eslite.
