Eric Adams wins the New York City Democratic mayoral primary: AP

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams has won the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City after appealing to the political center and promising to strike the right balance between fighting crime and ending racial injustice in policing. Democrats outnumber Republicans 7-to-1 in New York City. Adams became a police officer in 1984 and rose to the rank of captain before leaving to run for the state Senate in 2006. Speaking at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event last year, Adams complained about gentrifiers moving to the city from elsewhere. "New York City belongs to the people that were here and made New York City what it is."
