George Howell Coffee—the cafes, wholesale roasting, subscription, and education programs—is unusual in that it’s his third incarnation of a coffee company. He saw parallels between his focus on single origin coffee and small farmers with the wine industry’s emphasis on terroir. He rebranded and changed packaging, but in other ways picked up where he left off–by focusing on single origin coffees at the source. His vision for his coffee shops, however, is different this time, more purposeful than before, and more ambitious than perhaps any independent operation in the region, if not the East Coast. He hopes to develop a hub and spoke approach for metro area coffee shops and possibly expand to New York.
