The school in the seaside town usually has 2,500 students coming for English lessons every year from Spain, Italy and elsewhere. Manager Alison Drew says language schools for overseas fee-paying students have been a “forgotten industry” during the pandemic, according to the BBC. Jodie Grey, chief executive of English UK, said the group cannot see any prospect of significant recovery until 2022. They warn that language schools are on the "brink of collapse", putting 35,000 jobs and the yearly £1.4 billion they bring to local economies at risk.
