However, Sri Lanka has a reputation when it comes to enforced disappearances, and according to certain human rights groups, Sri Lanka has the second highest number of enforced disappearances in the world, with an estimated number between 60,000 and 100,000 disappeared persons since the late 1980s. However, the drawn out debate on enforced disappearances is not going to be forgotten, nor should it be. Enforced disappearances were prevalent during the insurgencies in the South and during the war between the defence forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). As a country, Sri Lanka has failed to even continue the allowance allocated for the families of the disappeared.
