Energy concerns drive new palm oil controlsThe Commerce Ministry will step up controls on crude palm oil (CPO) exports from Tuesday as part of efforts to manage domestic supply, safeguard energy security and stabilise bottled palm oil prices without affecting farmers' incomes. At the same time, Thailand continues to record high levels of both domestic consumption and exports of palm oil, prompting authorities to ensure balanced management of the entire palm oil system, he said. The change is intended to help authorities manage domestic stock levels more effectively in line with energy demand and to prevent potential shortages, he said. Palm oil, as a locally produced renewable energy source, plays an important role in Thailand's energy mix, making it necessary to align export volumes with domestic production and demand, Mr Witthayakorn said. He said the policy also seeks to protect oil palm farmers by maintaining fair and appropriate price levels.
