An endangered gray wolf that wandered thousands of miles through Northern California has died, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said Thursday. OR-54, a 3- to 4-year-old female, was found dead Wednesday in Shasta County, the agency said in a statement. Another collared wolf, OR-59, was found shot to death in Northern California. A wolf from Oregon dubbed OR-7 arrived in 2011, becoming the first confirmed in the California wild in 90 years. “This is a tragic development for the early stages of wolf recovery in California,” said Amaroq Weiss, a West Coast wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity.
