Malaysia’s medal hopes in the boys’ singles went up in smoke as Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar and Goh Wyman crashed out in the quarter-finals of the World Junior Championships in Kazan, Russia yesterday. Shaqeem fought tooth and nail against Indonesia’s Yonathan Ramlie before suffering a 21-16, 17-21, 21-19 defeat in 64 minutes. Although national junior coach Kwan Yoke Meng was disappointed with the outcome in the boys’ singles, he was more concerned about Wyman’s injury. Yoke Meng said Wyman suffered the injury when he was leading 13-6 against Yu Sheng Po of Taiwan before winning the match on Wednesday. “I did not want him to aggravate his injury and subsequently advised him not to play today (yesterday) after consulting the tournament doctor,” said Yoke Meng.
