By tradition, Rome was founded on that day, 21 April 753 BC, with Romulus becoming the first of seven kings. Initially a relatively small settlement with limited influence, over the following five centuries of the republic Rome grew as its territory expanded. By the end of the Third Punic War in 146 BC, Roman territory covered parts of the Iberian Peninsula and what’s now Tunisia.
