Emergency shelter for women survivors of violence opened in Kisumu

Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET) on Thursday opened a rescue centre in Kisumu to host women and children fleeing violence. The shelter has been named the Freedom House. "The limited shelters were full and some of us had to host survivors in our houses,” she said. Civil Society Organizations in Kisumu County had earlier sounded alarmed over the rise of violence against women and girls since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The also called on local authorities to set up a coordinated mechanism for response against domestic and sexual violence including operationalizing a government-run shelter that had been built but remains dormant more than two years later.
