The Taoiseach and Tánaiste have rounded on Elon Musk’s X social media site, with Leo Varadkar labelling the online platform formerly known as Twitter as a “sewer”, amid mounting concern that it is allowing abusive and hateful accounts to remain active. “Twitter, as it used to be called, has always been a bit of a sewer as far as social media goes,” Mr Varadkar said at a briefing for journalists. “She said very clearly that social media companies, in particular TikTok and Meta, they were responding, engaging with gardaí and taking down these vile posts as they came up. We have proactively taken action on more than 1,230 pieces of content under our rules relating to the riots,” the social media company said.
