Kirkland, now 61, was accused of repeatedly stabbing doorman Markandu Kulasingam with a kitchen knife in what appeared to have been an unprovoked attack. Kirkland will remain in custody until a hearing before the Ontario Review Board, a tribunal that handles the cases of those unfit to stand trial or not criminally responsible due to mental health disorders. Ellis Kirkland was arrested at a Church St. hotel on March 10, 2016 following the knife attack and a standoff with police that came at the end of a citywide search. A Harvard-educated architect who was charged in a stabbing attack on a doorman at a Rosedale condo has been found not criminally responsible. Nunziata, who represented Kirkland in mental health court, had known her through their families since his time as a politician in the 1980s.
