SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - El Salvador’s Supreme Court has overturned a 30-year sentence for a woman convicted in July of aggravated homicide for allegedly having an abortion. The court ordered a new trial for Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz, who was released Friday after almost three years in jail. She was greeted by activists chanting “Evelyn, you are not alone!”Hernandez said she was raped and didn’t realize she was pregnant. The Associated Press normally doesn’t name victims of alleged sexual assault, but Hernandez has spoken publicly about her case. Abortion is illegal in all situations in El Salvador.
