Image Comics and DC garnered the most nods, with 19 (plus 11 shared) and 17 (plus 7 shared) nominations respectively, but a wide variety of publishers large and small were recognized in what industry observers are calling one of the most competitive slates ever. In an Eisner Awards first, Image Comics, the Portland-based publisher of creator-owned work and third-largest comic publisher in the US by market share, received all six nomination in the Best New Series category. Among individual creators, acclaimed writer Tom King got 5 nominations: Best Short Story (from DC’s Swamp Thing Winter Special), Best Continuing Series (Batman), Best Limited Series (Mister Miracle), Best Graphic Album­–Reprint (The Vision hardcover), and Best Writer. Named for acclaimed comics creator Will Eisner, the awards are celebrating their 31st year of bringing attention to and highlighting the best publications and creators in comics and graphic novels. Industry professionals will have the opportunity to vote for the winners in an online process that extends through June 14.
