Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has said that a three-month state of emergency will be imposed after two deadly bombings hit Coptic churches on Sunday, killing at least 43 people. “A series of steps will be taken, most importantly, the announcement of a state of emergency for three months after legal and constitution steps are taken,” Sisi said in a speech aired on state television, reports Reuters. Alexandria’s St Mark’s Cathedral, the historical seat of Christianity in Egypt, was targeted several hours later, killing at least 16 people and injuring 31, the Independent reported. Islamic State’s Amaq news agency claimed responsibility for the bombings, saying a group affiliated with the IS had carried out the attacks.
