Egypt completes 42 sanitary landfills under national solid waste overhaul

Egypt has completed 42 of 46 planned sanitary landfills as part of its nationwide reform of the municipal solid waste management system, Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said during a meeting with officials from the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI). According to a ministry statement, the projects include the construction of fixed and mobile transfer stations, as well as environmentally compliant sanitary landfills, delivered across multiple governorates under cooperation agreements between the two sides. In addition to the 42 completed landfills, 14 mobile transfer stations and 11 fixed transfer stations have been handed over. Awad noted that Egypt has made tangible progress in recent years in modernising its solid waste management system, including the establishment of sanitary landfills, transfer stations, recycling facilities and waste treatment plants. She stressed the importance of completing the remaining projects within the set timelines, particularly transfer stations and landfill sites, while continuing efforts to eliminate historical waste accumulations.
