A 200MW utility-scale solar plant is to be built in Egypt and expected to be operational by early next year. The Kom Ombo plant will contribute to the Egyptian government’s target to generate 42% of the country’s electricity from renewable energy sources by 2035. Saudi developer ACWA Power announced on April 25 that it had signed a $123 million financing package to develop the project. Egypt’s 2035 Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy, which builds on previous strategies, emphasises the importance of renewable energy. According to the International Trade Administration, Egypt is working on increasing the supply of electricity generated from renewable sources to42% by 2035, with wind providing 14%, hydropower 1.98%, photovoltaic (PV) 21.3%, wind 14%, concentrating solar power (CSP) 5.52%, and conventional energy sources 57.33% by 2035.
