Eglinton Crosstown wall collapse nets demolition company $60,000 fine

A company hired to demolish buildings at the site of a future Eglinton Crosstown LRT station was fined $60,000 Friday for an incident where a wall collapsed onto pedestrians. Environmental Services Inc., was knocking down a former restaurant at Eglinton Ave. and Bathurst St. Two workers were assigned that day to control pedestrian traffic under the demolition, using hand signals to alert machine operators that they were escorting people beneath the scaffolding, said the release. Just before 2:30 p.m., one worker signaled and believed they received a signal back, indicating the demolition had stopped. However, a “latent defect,” an issue that couldn’t have been uncovered by inspection, caused the wall to collapse.
