The Lancet study outlines where to focus efforts to combat cholera in sub-Saharan Africa which records 1.7 million cases every year. The study found that by targeting oral cholera vaccine (OCV) campaigns to known hotspots, affected countries could eliminate over 50 per cent of the region’s cholera cases. These researchers found that cholera hotspots accounted for most of sub-Saharan Africa’s cholera cases—yet they represented just a tiny proportion, roughly two per cent, of the region’s population. The scientists determined that effectively targeting cholera control efforts to only the worst of these hotspots would cut the region’s cholera burden in half.
