Effort to find workers for Central a head of harvests shifts online

PHOTO: GREGOR RICHARDSONCovid-19 restrictions have forced a job expo — aimed at encouraging jobseekers into the horticulture sector — online. About 5000 workers are needed to get through the summer and autumn harvests in Central Otago. Some orchardists were not confident they would have enough staff to get through next month and January, and the shortage would get even bigger when tertiary students returned to study in early February, Mrs Sutton said. The website, which launched yesterday morning, featured multiple Central Otago horticulture employers, including Dunstan Hill, Leaning Rock, Suncrest and Purepac, and had videos explaining the sector’s job opportunities and career paths. Depending on how well the online expo went, the group might look at doing it for other sectors, Mrs Sutton said.
