Edmonton court appearance for U-Haul attack suspect put off for three weeks

EDMONTON—An arraignment for Abdulahi Sharif has been put off for three weeks as he is being held in 23-hour lock-up and can’t co-ordinate with legal aid. Sharif is facing a dozen charges including five counts of attempted murder, five counts of dangerous driving, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and aggravated assault. The charges relate to a Sept. 30 attack in Edmonton in which a police officer was hit by a car and stabbed and four pedestrians were struck by a U-Haul cube van. Sharif appeared in Edmonton court Friday through closed circuit television from jail, standing with his arms crossed and his hands tucked into the sleeves of his orange jump suit. As the Queen’s Bench justice granted an adjournment, setting Sharif’s next appearance for May 25, Sharif appeared to struggle to understand the instructions.
